Powering up Castle Vale

SHAP (Sustainable Housing Action PArtnership) came to us to create a wide range of assets for their new campaign, Power Up Castle Vale, which aimed to empower citizens through co-design to create a vision for their very own Net Zero Neighbourhood.
This involved retrofit assessments, installation of indoor air quality sensors, and series of community engagement events and workshops, intended to support/enable the creation of a community energy plan shaped by residents.
They had an interesting set of challenges, with the local population being slightly older than average, predominantly white, and understood to be proud of the estate’s identity and history. Research showed terms like ‘Net Zero’ didn’t resonate locally, so we needed to create a series of assets that felt warm, friendly and personal to the area, without coming across as preachy or overly environmentally focused.
I worked together with my colleague to create a full suite of brand assets for them to use, including brand guidelines, iconography for their website and use in Canva, posters for bus shelters, pop up event banners, flyers/leaflets, a template for powerpoint, and social media post templates. Not to mention an explainer video with looping .gif animation exports as well!
Brand Guidelines and Canva Assets
To give us a nice starting point, the client had come up with a colour scheme already, and an idea for a logo. With some tweaking and suggestions to help make the logo more readable at a distance and make the colours more accessible to visually impaired audiences, we created a suite of assets and brand guidelines which the client loved.
This is the famous Castle Vale art installation which provided the inspiration for the logo and other design assets across the branding.
Bus Shelter Poster Designs
The client required a collection of different poster designs to appear in bus shelters in the area. They appeared as both digital and print versions, depending on the bus stop.
Hand-out Flyer Design
A template for a handout A5 flyer. This was made in Canva for the client to easily change the copy to whatever they needed when they needed it.
Pop-Up Event Banner Design
PUCV host a lot of in-person local events, requiring a tall pop up banner print-out for them to easily transport to each location. It was important to make sure all the important information was at the top half of the design, as the bottom half was likely going to be covered by tables and other things.
PowerPoint Template Design
They also wanted a powerpoint template utilising the design assets, made in a way that they could easily adjust the content as they saw fit.
Social Media Post Design
Finally we gave them a couple of social media template designs in Canva, showing them different ways they could use the assets creatively and giving guideance on the best sizes and ways to utilise these across their different platforms.
